In Sanskrit, Tri means three, while phala means fruits. Thus, Triphala is a concoction made from 3 fruits. This herbal concoction has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years.
Triphala has been used in Ayurveda for treating many different types of ailments, right from dental cavities to digestive issues. It is a prime example of polyherbal medicines since Ayurveda believes that a synergistic effect of different herbs could show a better effect that individual effect of one drug.
Triphala is comprised of powdered fruits /extracts of 3 fruits – Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica).
These 3 fruits are detailed below.
a) Amalaki (Emblica officinalis):
The fruits of this tree are widely known as Indian gooseberry or Amla. This fruit is a treasure house and has many benefits –
- It is one of Ayurveda’s greatest rejuvenators
- Acts as a strong natural anti-oxidant
- Helps lower cholesterol
- Is a great source of Vitamin C
- Is very helpful in controlling the blood glucose levels in the diabetic patient
- Helps boost the immune system and metabolism
- Improves the skin and increases hair growth
- It improves the vision
- It balances Pitta
b) Haritaki (Terminalia chebula):
Commonly known as Harada, this herb is also called the Tibetan “king of medicine.” Some of the benefits of this fruits are:
- It improves cognitive functions,
- aids in digestion,
- promotes weight loss
- It is very helpful in treating an enlarged spleen or liver
- helps in controlling diabetes
- Has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects
- Is used as a laxative
- It significantly calms the Vata dosha
c) Bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica):
It is commonly known as Baheda and displays the following benefits:
- The fruits of this plant have rejuvenating properties
- The powder of this fruit helps in curing many respiratory ailments
- Helps in hepatitis, piles, diarrhea, asthma, dyspepsia, etc.
- Detoxify the blood, muscles, and fatty tissues
- It improves vision and hair growth
- A paste made from this powder and water is applied to the painful or swollen parts of the body to ease the pain
- Balance Kapha
When these fruits are combined to prepare Triphala, they show the following benefits:
- Stimulates digestion
- Relieves acidity in the stomach and heals ulcers and gastritis.
- Acts as the laxative
- Lowers blood cholesterol
- Reduces high blood pressure
- Helps treat anemia, palpitations, arrhythmia
- Helps balance high blood sugar levels in diabetic patients
- Heals the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments in cancer
- Widely used to treat eye diseases including conjunctivitis, progressive myopia, early stages of glaucoma and cataracts.
To conclude, it is advisable to consume 1 tbsp of this powder with warm water before going to bed for at least one month.
