Treating Aphasia and Ischemia With Orthomolecular Medicine

Treating and healing ischemia and aphasia with ordinary amino acids is the basis or Orthomolecular Medicine. Large doses of naturally found proteins called amino acids can repair the imbalance in the brain and repair its malfunction. These are affordable and are used in therapeutic doses much larger than those levels normally found in food. The concept of orthomolecular medicine is based upon the use of very large doses of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or botanical extracts for the cellular repair and enhancement of normal brain activities. These should be used o a long term basis for patients with aphasia or ischemia. If the cardiac and brain systems are compromised, the person should pursue orthomolecular medicine as a long term goal.

Damage to the body and brain are quite serious in aphasia or ischemia. Ischemia causes an excessive release of the excitatory neurotransmitters for the brain. Glutamate is the main amino acid that is excitatory and the brain of the person with ischemia and aphasia has too much glutamate. Acetylcholine and norepinephrine are the other excitatory amino acids in the brain.

In ischemia and aphasia, there is not enough of the amino acid GABA in the brain of the person. GABA, glycine, serotonin and dopamine are inhibitory neurotransmitters. The goal of orthomolecular medicine using amino acid therapy is to balance the neurotransmitters in the patient’s brain. The brain needs more GABA and less glutamate.

The neurotransmitters are molecules that get released neurons to relay information to another cell and can excite or inhibit the action of the brain cell. Dopamine, serotonin, and GABA may be lower than desired in aphasia and ischemia. The goal is to calm the brain and keep it from overproducing glutamate. This is partially avoiding stress and pain. Stress and pain lead to increased levels of glutamate. The amino acids that can be used for this disease are GABA, carnitine, and NAC. There are several goals for amino acid therapy. Treating the brain and cardiac systems should be the goal. Another goal should be improving overall health and improving quality of sleep. Once the brain has been impacted by stroke or ischemia, the cardiac system is often impaired and further circulatory issues will impair blow flow.

Is there another problem in the brain of the stroke patient? There may be an issue with the patient’s hormone levels. The hormones produced by the pituitary gland may out of balance. The endocrine system should be evaluated. This patient should have extensive diagnostic testing done on the neurotransmitters and hormones. Hormone levels can be corrected in several ways with different types of alternative medicine.

Amino acid therapy can be successful for cases involving ischemia or aphasia. The situation should be evaluated to determine if there are any secondary diseases which would alter the amino acids used or increase the amounts utilized. This treatment therapy may last several years. There should be food based vitamins and botanical extracts added for the optimal outcome.
