Silver, it is said, is one of nature’s 92 chemically pure elements with proven benefits for man while being toxic to all species of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, parasites and a number of viruses. Of late, this wonder-metal is slowly gaining ground as a therapeutic element in the form of colloidal silver. Believers of this novel form of alternative therapy, meanwhile, continue to profess of its amazing curative powers.

The term colloidal is derived from the Greek word meaning “glue-like”. Colloidal is a term referring to a state of matter. An element or compound is considered colloidal when the particles are sized between one nanometer and one micrometer, and the energy of the substance is predominantly governed by surface effects. A colloid is a solid, liquid or gaseous substance that is insoluble yet remains in suspension and dispersed in another fluid medium. Dissolved solids are ionic, not colloidal. Colloidal Silver is a fluid containing predominantly minute silver particles held in suspension, where the particles carry a slight negative electrical charge known as a zeta potential. In a true colloidal silver, there is less than 5% ionic content.

Research conducted during the late 1930s showed that while silver was absolutely harmless on man, it was toxic to all species of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, parasites and a number of viruses. Essentially, silver acts as a catalyst, disabling those enzymes that are necessary for the survival of single-cell bacteria, fungi and virus. At the same time, it protects the body’s natural enzymes and stimulates tissue growth. Despite its proven benefits, silver went out of favor as a remedy because of its prohibitive cost and the fact that manufacturers could not patent it. The discovery of antibiotics around the same time acted as double blow. The pharmaceutical industry moved in, causing colloidal research to be set aside in favor of fast working and financially lucrative drugs.

Silver made re-entry into the world of medicine in 1970’s in the form of colloidal silver. In its renaissance, it became even more popular because of its relative cost effectiveness and curative properties. It came as a pleasant surprise for everyone when it was found that colloidal silver is full of medicinal values. In some cases, it was found to be the only option left for treatment. A lot of people are using it and reaping its benefits.

Thanks to the eye opening researches, colloidal silver has come to limelight now. It is claimed to be the mightiest germ fighter. It is emerging as a wonder of modern medicine. A traditional antibiotic kills perhaps a half-dozen different disease organisms, but silver kills some 650. Resistant strains fail to develop. Moreover, silver is virtually non-toxic. It was also discovered that silver ions promote bone growth. Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial enzymes, colloidal silver leaves these tissue-cell enzymes intact, as they are radically different from the enzymes of primitive single-celled life. Thus colloidal silver is absolutely safe for humans.

Off late, it is being observed that some bacteria and viruses causing human diseases have developed resistance to antibiotics. Also, there has been substantial increase in the new strains of bacteria and viruses worldwide. This too has generated a renewed interest for colloidal silver in medical arena. Large companies are developing and introducing new silver compounds for a variety of anti-microbial applications, including protection against the spread of the AIDS virus.

Colloidal silver has been found particularly effective against skin disorders. This was proven long back by late Dr. Carl Moyer, chairman of Washington University’s Department of Surgery, in 1970’s when he demonstrated its effectiveness in the case of burn victims. It was shown that colloidal silver can be used over a large area of the body, in contrast to the normal antiseptic, and it can heal the affected skin much faster and safer manner. Subsequent researches proved that it can be used with great results in several skin disorders like acne, athlete’s foot, Candida, eczema etc. When used topically, it was found to be painless on cuts, burns, acne, abrasions, in open wounds.

Colloidal silver is antiseptic, has proven antibacterial properties and is antimicrobial. More recently, these properties have been properly utilized in soap making. The antimicrobial properties and germ fighting capabilities make colloidal silver a perfect ingredient for soap making. As silver is totally natural, it results in a non toxic soap. It is to be noted that colloidal silver only kills micro-organisms when they are in contact with it for a sufficient period of time. Therefore, regular use of soap with colloidal silver is strongly recommended.
