Stem cells generate new blood cells in our body. They are very unique as they can develop a number of different cells in the body. These cells are of very early stage and can eventually turned into specialized cells such as nerves and organs. Scientists today perform researches on stem cells that are said to have the ability to repair damaged organs in our body.
Here are the pros and cons:
1. Those that are obtained from embryos are of the earliest stage of cells and therefore, they have the ability to develop into any other types of cells. They can be kept for a very long time and they can divide very quickly and can be cloned as well.
2. Scientists are very optimistic about what stem cells could contribute to the medical world. A few researches have already been conducted and proven that are able to treat chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. And just recently, it is said that they are able to treat or prevent almost every severe diseases such as strokes, kidney, liver, heart disease, pancreas disease and also arthritis.
3. A lot of people have been debating on using these for treatment purposes issue. Embryonic stem cells are originally from embryos. Some people argue that this type of research is destroying one’s life. Embryonic cells will result in a baby if they are implanted into a donor.
4. Embryonic cells are too used for cloning research in order to increase the amount of stem cells. This is usually considered as unethical and it is even illegal in certain countries to perform cloning on human cells. Scientists argued that the cloned cells will be used for research purposes only. However, there is still no definite results regarding this issue.
