Possibly one of the friendliest dogs in the world, the Alaskan Malamute is beloved across North America. Many choose to have this wonderful dog as a pet, and many want to know how to go about proper Alaskan Malamute training. There are some special considerations to take, but overall the training of this breed of dog is similar to training other breeds.
Spend Time Together
Malamutes love to be around people and they love being around their family. A good way to begin training them is to bond with the dog and spend time with them. If the dog is bonded to you, they will be much more apt to spending time learning things from you.
Use Positive Rewards
Alaskan Malamute training can go a lot faster if you use positive rewards – instead of negative rewards. They respond well to positive commands and treats, so use that instead of yelling or using negative reinforcement on the dog. Remember that you should always be the following with your training:
1. Kind
2. Patient
3. Understanding
4. Loving
Start Training Young
Malamutes are stubborn dogs and if you don’t start training them at a young age, you may end up having a difficult time training them later on. Start almost the minute you get the puppy. They will be much more receptive to training if you start when they are a young puppy.
Be The Alpha
Malamutes have a pack mentality and they will try to be the alpha dog. If you don’t stop this early on, the Alaskan Malamute training will be that much more difficult.
